About Agni Teerth, Rameswaram

Agni Teerth is the main sea beach in Rameswaram, located near the Ramanathaswamy
Temple. It is considered the first and foremost among the 64 sacred water bodies (teerthams) in
Rameswaram. Pilgrims take a holy dip here before entering the temple.

The beach is a significant site for performing ancestral rites and asthi visarjan.

Religious Significance

According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva at this spot to
atone for the sin of killing Ravana (a Brahmin). The water of Agni Teerth is believed to have
the power to cleanse all sins.
