About Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main and probably the most spectacular ghat in Varanasi.
Located close to the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, it hosts the spectacular Ganga Aarti every
evening, which is attended by thousands of devotees and tourists.

The ghat is also used for performing tarpan and other ancestral rites. The steps leading down to
the river are lined with priests offering various religious services.

Religious Significance

The name Dashashwamedh means "10 horses sacrificed" - it is believed that Lord
Brahma performed the Dashashwamedha Yajna (sacrifice of 10 horses) at this spot to welcome Lord
Shiva back to Varanasi. Another legend says that King Divodasa performed 10 Ashwamedha yagyas here.
