About Vishnupad Temple, Gaya

Vishnupad Temple is one of the most sacred sites for performing Pind Daan and Shraddh rituals.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu's footprint is imprinted on a rock inside the temple.
The temple stands on the banks of the holy Phalgu River and is the primary destination for millions
of Hindus who come to perform ancestral rites for the salvation of departed souls.

The temple architecture is magnificent, featuring a 30-meter high structure with 8 rows of beautifully
carved pillars. The footprint of Lord Vishnu is enshrined in the sanctum, measuring about 40 cm long.

Religious Significance

Gaya is mentioned in the Vayu Purana and Agni Purana as one of the most sacred places
for Shraddh. It is believed that performing Pind Daan here guarantees moksha (liberation) for ancestors
up to seven generations. Lord Rama himself is said to have performed Shraddh for his father King Dasharatha here.

The Vishnupad Temple is also associated with the legend of the demon Gayasur, who was so pious that
the gods feared losing their devotees to him. Lord Vishnu is said to have placed his foot on Gayasur's
head, pressing him into the earth, and promised that Gaya would become a place of salvation.
