About This Ritual
Asthi Visarjan is the sacred ritual of immersing the cremated remains (ashes
and bone fragments) of the deceased in holy rivers. This ritual is typically performed on the
3rd, 7th, or 13th day after cremation, depending on family tradition and circumstances.
The ashes are collected from the cremation ground in an earthen pot. Before immersion, a brief
puja is performed, and mantras are recited for the peace of the departed soul. The ashes are
then slowly released into the flowing waters while chanting sacred verses.
The most auspicious places for Asthi Visarjan are the River Ganges (especially at Haridwar,
Varanasi, and Prayagraj), the confluence of sacred rivers (Sangams), and other holy water bodies.
Many families also immerse ashes at the same location where their ancestors' ashes were released.
