Ekoddishta Shraddh
एकोद्दिष्ट श्राद्ध
Shraddh performed for a single deceased person during the mourning period.
About This Ritual
Ekoddishta Shraddh ("aimed at one") is performed specifically for a
recently deceased person during the first year after death. Unlike regular Shraddh where
offerings are made to multiple ancestors, this is directed solely at the newly deceased.
This ritual is performed on specific days during the mourning period:
- Monthly Shraddh (Masik Shraddh) for 12 months
- Quarterly Shraddh (Unamasik)
- Half-yearly Shraddh (Shadamasik)
The ritual ensures the soul's journey through the afterlife is supported until it joins
the community of ancestors through Sapindikarana.
Significance
During the first year, the soul is believed to be in transition,
creating a new spiritual body for its existence in Pitru Loka. Ekoddishta Shraddh
provides the necessary spiritual sustenance for this transformation.
