About This Ritual

Pitru Paksha Shraddh is the special ancestral worship performed during
the 16-day Pitru Paksha period (also called Shraddh Paksha or Mahalaya Paksha). This falls
in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (September-October).

During this period, special Shraddh rituals are performed for all ancestors:
1. Daily Tarpan throughout the 16 days
2. Specific Shraddh on the tithi matching the ancestor's death date
3. Pind Daan offerings
4. Feeding Brahmins and the poor
5. Making donations

If the exact tithi of death is unknown, Shraddh can be performed on Sarvapitri Amavasya
(the last day of Pitru Paksha), which is considered suitable for all ancestors.

Key days during Pitru Paksha:
- Bharani Shraddh (for those who died young)
- Avidhava Navami (for deceased mothers)
- Ekadashi Shraddh (for ascetics)
- Chaturdashi (for those who died in accidents)
- Sarvapitri Amavasya (for all ancestors)

Significance

According to Hindu scriptures, during Pitru Paksha, the spirits of
ancestors descend to earth and reside in their descendants' homes. This is the most
auspicious time to perform Shraddh as the ancestors are closest to the earthly realm.

Shraddh performed during this period is said to provide benefits equivalent to Shraddh
performed at Gaya. It is believed that ancestors are especially receptive to offerings
during this time.
